FOR YOUR PLESIURE. PLEASURE. LEISURE. HONEST. OPEN. SECRET. Voyeurism: the practice of obtaining sexual gratification by looking at sexual objects or acts, especially secretively. The bedroom is an intimate space, men crawl into our veins through the lens of our phones as infections rise. Arch your back and cover your face, the male gaze works at an accelerated pace. Dronme Davis proclaims, “we are taught that any male attention is good attention”, so we allow ourselves to lust after non-desirable scenarios. For your pleisure, the second person “you” is the voyeur, walking in the bedroom. The bedroom is intimate space, it is a comfortable space; honesty arises from the pores in the floor, don’t pick at your face, let it shimmer in the light. To exist in your body is a rebellious act, to taunt perception, to dare to be seen. She was violated; to be captured at that age, aged nineteen, she was not ready to be seen. Susan Sontag spoke of, the act of photography as a violation; to see someone as they never see themselves. “To photograph people is to violate them, by seeing them as they never see themselves, by having knowledge of them that they can never have; it turns people into objects that can be symbolically possessed. Just as a camera is a sublimation of the gun, to photograph someone is a subliminal murder - a soft murder, appropriate to a sad, frightened time.”. That intimacy is a memory, captured in a 35mm lens. The moment ceases to evaporate. It remains a moment that you let someone in to bask in your pleisure. Watching her watch herself was always intimate because self-destruction is intimate. As a woman we walk in the world under a microscope so even in the privacy of our own company, we take pleasure in making ourselves more digestible. To push back in the honesty of her body is unfortunately rebellious. To not hide in clothing is rebellious. Take pride in existing.
